Quick tips in managing your at home business
If you work from your house, you know the importance already of needing a dedicated office space separate from your family area. Additionally, if you have your own home business, this is even more important. Here are some quick tips in making sure that your at home business is successful (and stays that way)
1.) Set up a dedicated office area. If you are just a virtual assistant for an Internet company, you may get by with taking up that corner in your living room. But if you have your own business that you operate out of your home, you should have a dedicated office. This way all of your business related items (like your stock if you have to store it at home, or catalogs) can just be in that one room. You won't have to deal with this stuff scattered all over your kitchen table then.
2.) Keep good records. This goes for both if you are just working at home and if you have your own home business. Keep all your receipts for business related expenses because most of the stuff you can write off. Also, if you have to purchase catalogs and samples, check with your tax advisor to see if you could write off these expenses as well.
3.) As much as you may love your kids, I don't recommend letting them have access to your business things. Keep your samples put away on a top shelf so they don't get into them for their own use. And if you are billing your customers directly, I recommend keeping your copy of any invoices in a filing cabinet (preferable locked) so that children don't get into them. Kids love to draw, and some children may find that invoice you have sitting on your desk as a piece of scribble paper.
4.) Have a separate business phone line so your customers can reach you. (Check with your tax advisor again here to see if you can write this off at tax time!) It use to be expensive to have an additional phone line in your home, but I've seen many different specials going on with Cable companies that now offer a phone service as well. Additionally, there are places that offer very cheap 877 or 866 numbers, such as Kall8 (just do a search for Kall8 online). This company offers the 866 and 877 lines for a very low monthly fee. Basically it is a voicemail service, so your customers can call that number, leave a message, you get notified via email when you have a message and then you can just call them back.
As you can see, it is very important to keep yourself organized in order to be successful with your at home business. Thank you for taking the time to read my article.
