Do You Want To Become Self Employed? Then Don’t Fire Your Boss Just Yet!

If you have a yearning to fire your boss and you want to become self employed, then don’t fire your boss just yet! 

Why? 

Well as tempting as it sounds, becoming self employed is certainly not as easy as it sounds. 

Not to mention just starting a business can be risky, whether you have a job or not and the failure rate of small businesses is certainly very high. 

So don’t burn your bridges because you may want to (or have to) return to your employer someday. 

If you want to become self employed there are a few important points that you need to be aware of. 

1.     Are you willing to take some financial risk?  Because if you’re not, then I suggest you quit now.  It takes money to invest in a business and money to run a business – if you’re not prepared to part with some of it then ‘entrepreneurship’ may not just be the right fit for you.

2.     Have you spent most of your working life as an employee?  If so, then you’re in for a big shock.  To be successful in self employment you have to be prepared to forgo a lot of ‘luxuries’ that you may have received from your employer.  By this I mean sick leave, paid vacations, steady pay cheques etc.   Because if you’re serious about becoming a successful entrepreneur, you’re going to have to forgo a lot of these luxuries until you get your business established. 

3.     Do you get discouraged easily?  Again if you said ‘yes’ to this one then you’re in for a lot of unpleasant surprises.  People who are self employed or entrepreneurs face lots of setbacks.  Potential buyers don’t return calls, business sours and equipment breaks down.  It takes willpower and an almost unwavering optimism to overcome these constant obstacles. 

So if you want to become self employed, don’t fire your boss just yet.  Wait until you’ve got a good steady stream of income coming in on a regular basis first, (and I’m talking months here, not just a few weeks), and then when the timing feels right – go for it!
